Darau, Rampayan, Inanam, Sembulan, Likas and many more villages nearby are settled by ethnic Bajaus whose ancestors are fishermen and were very much sea warriors. That is why their dwellings are mostly on mangrove swamps that made their livelihood easier. This kind of dwellings thrived from Sembulan all the way to Kudat on the West Coast of Sabah.
While Darau and Rampayan are close to "civilised" KK the developments around these villages have changed their surrounding landscape. Many river courses had changed, and drains were constructed thru their villages to avert flooding of the developed areas.
Development had also educated their children and of course our TYT is one of their generation.
Politics had played with their allegiance and no doubt some leaders benefited while the ordinary folks do not really had much chances.
A government that cares all are needed by them to help restructure their kampung and lifestyle. I was told, Dtk Hajiji had done his best to resettle some villagers at Mengkabong and a new landed village was constructed. Some were uncomfortable with the arrangement and soon set up another water village elsewhere.
I believe some of them had been allocated land at Kampung reserves but few accustomed to makan gaji lifestyles appreciated and constructed their homes on these lots. Others sold them for cash needs.
Their children are faced with the realities of modern lifestyles like having Astro and Kancils. These villages are not ready for carparks. How are these to be accomodated. Some raise their ground by reclamation but unplanned reclamation will only introduce more flood problems.
Another big problems are the influx of illegals occupying spaces in their villages and taking over most of the fishing activities...what will their children become of next.

Bro Amde,
This mosque was a gift from the Berjaya Government of Datuk Harris to comemorate Merapok as the Bandar Sahabat with Sarawak due to the family ties between the people of Sindumin and Merapok. It was built right on the borderline. Harris needed a quick design and took to like the one at the Telekom Training Centre Menggatal which was under construction at that time circa 1984.
That's why the two mosques are of exact replica.
There was a ceremony attended by Harris and a VIP from Sarawak witnessed by rep from the Federal Gov.
A telephone exchange was installed at Sindumin by the Sabah region Telekom Dept so as to enable people from both places to communicate easily.
As it stands today I share your laments on the state of disrepair. It is on no man's land, brother. Sarawak didn't reciprocate Sabah's gestures.

One remembers that today's life seems to be not very cheap, nevertheless different people require cash for different things and not every person earns enough cash. Thus to get fast business loans or college loan will be a proper way out.

liau, it is nice to know that you are one of the great majority of sabahan muslims who never consider themselves malays. but it is even more wonderful to hear that you are one of the very few sabahan muslims who are willing and dare enough to come into the open and declare that you are not a malay. cheers. peter marajin
